Split Rail
Folding Environments
In 2006, the artist purchased an Ontario farm property that held remnants of old split rail fences. The beauty of these structures soon became a subject in the artist’s examination of the beauty and structure of folded paper. Through digital photography the artist transforms small paper works into built environments of ambiguous scale. Use of commercial material in the construction references the omnipresence of advertising in the modern environment. The original impetus was to create temporary sculptural objects which would be recorded through digital photographs. However, the beauty of the forms lead the artist to translate these photographic images in paint. To date, these paintings are oil on board. The imagery references split rail fences, bundles of split rails, and fallen deconstructed split rail fences.
